During the COP26 summit in Glasgow, Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari pledged that Nigeria would cut its carbon emissions and reach net zero by 2060 through a gradual plan to phase out the use of fossil fuels. Backing up this pledge, the federal government of Nigeria (FGN) unveiled the energy transition plan (ETP) which keys into the continent’s energy security agenda. Against the backdrop of Nigeria’s commitment to net-zero emissions by 2060, this research probes the alternatives placed before communities and non-state actors whose livelihoods are dependent on fossil fuel extraction and local refining.
